Chernobyl #6
The feat of divers In the first days after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the liquidators fought the fire - dousing the fire with water and covering the ignition sources with sand and small stones. This helped prevent possible dire consequences. But after five days, the situation became complicated - the reactor continued to melt and gradually destroyed the concrete slab, under which there was a pool with a huge volume of water. The contact of the red-hot mass with water could throw a giant cloud of radioactive water vapor into the atmosphere. To prevent a possible disaster, it was necessary to immediately drain the pool of water. The situation required an operation involving people with scuba diving skills because access to the shutoff valves was underwater. Three people were needed for this task. The volunteers understood that radioactive exposure awaited them in the pool. Divers safely reached the shut-off valves. It took them a few tries, but they were up to the task, and their feat became the stuff of legend.
