« Mary Rose" - an English three-deck carrack, the flagship of the English navy under King Henry VIII Tudor. This large vessel for its time was launched in Portsmouth in 1510. The name carakka was probably given in honor of the French Queen Mary Tudor (sister of the king) and the rose as the heraldic symbol of the House of Tudor.

In 1545 French King Francis I landed on the Isle of Wight. The British sent 80 ships led by the Mary Rose to the Solent Strait to defend the island. Overloaded with artillery, the carrack, which had never been characterized by stability, was suddenly listed to starboard by a gust of wind and, filled with water through the gun ports, sank with most of the crew and Admiral George Carew. Only 35 sailors out of four hundred managed to escape.
