Built by the Ateliers et Chantiers de la Manche (Manche Shipyards) in Dieppe and commissioned in April 1975, this ship was the second after Le Noroît in a series of oceanographic research and support vessels. "Suroît" made a positive contribution to the search for the sunken "Titanic" in the summer of 1985 thanks to its creation of a sonar, a high-precision detection device.
