The Foch aircraft carrier (visual call sign R 99) was the Clemenceau family ship. It was the second warship to be named after Marshal Ferdinand Foch, who declared: "Airplanes [...] are of no military importance." Foch, which was laid down in February 1957, was built at Atlantic Shipyards in Saint-Nazaire and commissioned on July 15, 1963. Landing was carried out on an inclined runway 165 m long, equipped with four arresting cables. Two 50-meter steam catapults allowed 15/20 ton aircraft to take off at a speed of 110 knots. Two lifts could lift a 15-ton aircraft to a height of 8.50 m in 9 seconds. Between 1980 and 1981, it underwent an IPER (Intermittent Outage for Maintenance and Repair), which provided it with a naval operating system for tactical information, an inertial propulsion system for adjusting the aircraft platform before ejection, missile bunkers for AM-39 Exocet missiles and a tactical nuclear weapons. Thus, it will be able to accommodate 4 or 5 An-52 and then an ASMP6 missile. After a 37-year career in the French Navy, it was sold on November 15, 2000 to the Brazilian Navy, which finally decommissioned it in November 2018.
