The Indianapolis 500 has featured a pace car every year since 1911. This pace car is used for two main purposes. At the start of the race, the pace car leads the assembled starting grid around the track for a predetermined number of warm-up laps without points. Then, if the judges see fit, he clears the field at a given speed to start the race. Additionally, during yellow flag caution periods, the pace car will enter the track and catch the leader, confusing the field at reduced speed.
