Takanyu-class units were designed and built based on Murasame-class units. They differ from their predecessors mainly: a much more modern fire control system (OPS-24B), a completely new hydroacoustic station, as well as changed artillery and missile weapons. They currently complement the Congo- and Atago-class units, acting more as anti-submarine and underwater target units. The first ship of this class, Takanami (DD-110), was built at the IHI Corporation shipyard in Tokyo. Its name refers to a Japanese destroyer of the Second World War. The unit was put into operation shortly after it was commissioned - in 2004. - was sent to the Indian Ocean to support American activities related to the so-called war on terrorism, which, however, was met with protests in the country. In the same year, the ship took part in a rescue and humanitarian operation in Thailand, caused by an earthquake and tsunami. In the period 2009-2010, the destroyer operated in the area of Somalia, performing anti-piracy operations and, above all, protecting civilian shipping. Takanyu (DD-110) remains in active service.
