Focked-Wulf Fw 190A-8 Dragon 5502 fighter assembly model

In February 1944, the Anglo-Americans again resorted to massive raids on aircraft and engine factories in Germany, and this time the bomber formations were very effectively covered by escort fighters. For German pilots, the fight against Allied aircraft became seriously complicated.

But the escort fighter pilots soon discovered with unpleasant surprise that the FW 190 had changed, first of all in terms of increasing the effectiveness of weapons and increasing the survivability of the design.

In February 1944, the Germans planned to put into series a more advanced modification of the A-8. It was assumed that of the 528 "Fok-ke-Wulfov" 244 will belong to this model. However, it was actually possible to collect only 269 FW 190s (and not a single A-8 among them) and to repair another 64 "one hundred and ninety". Only in the following month, the rhythmic work of German enterprises, which built 320 fighters and 296 K. Tank attack aircraft, was resumed (the Phi-Zieler aircraft factories in Kassel and Focke-Wulf in Cottbus handed over 83 FW 190A-8s in March ). The "Fokke-Wulf" factories were also involved in the production of aircraft of this modification. in Azlan, "Weserflug" in Tempelhof, "Arad" in Tutov, "Ago" in Oschersleben and "Norddeutsche Dornier" in Wismar. As it turned out later, this model turned out to be the most popular of all the "one hundred and nineties", the volume of its production was 6,655 units.

Among the main specific features of the A-8 modification, the following can be named. The ETS 501 bomb racks were moved forward by 20 cm, the FuG 16ZY antenna was placed under the left wing, and the Robot photo-cine machine gun was placed in the wing itself. From January 1945, the armor behind the pilot was reinforced. Some planes were equipped with propellers with wide wooden blades, which were made by the "Junkers" factories. and "Schwartz". As in the A-7 modification, behind the pilot's cabin there were fasteners unified for the installation of a 115-liter additional tank for gasoline or nitrous oxide, as well as the corresponding pipelines. The thickness of the front armor ring increased from 5 to 6.5 mm, and the ring that protected the oil tank - from 3 to 5.5 mm.
