Amerigo Vespucci's training ship, based today in Genoa, was built and equipped by the Royal Shipyards of Castellammare di Stabia (Naples). The author of the project was Lieutenant Colonel Francesco Rontudi from the Italian Naval Engineering Corps. Work began on May 12, 1930, and was launched on February 22, 1931. After the war, eight times, from 1958 to 2016, the yacht underwent numerous modernization modifications. Designed as a frigate, Amerigo Vespucci is equipped with two diesel engines connected to two electric generators with a capacity of 3,000 hp. Electricity is produced by four AC diesel generators. Since its launch in 1931, "Amerigo Vespucci" has always been used for military and naval training of cadets of the Livorno Naval Academy and cadet pilots of the crew corps of the Italian Navy. From 1933 to 1955, he made several crossings to the United States, Central America, Brazil and Argentina, as well as numerous sailing school ship cruises from the North Sea to the east coast of the Atlantic. Since the mid-1980s, Amerigo Vespucci regularly participated in "tall ship races" and various gatherings in Europe and France.
