Panzer IV Sd.Kfz. 161/2 Ausf. J is the full name of the hero of our story. It was created as an advanced version of the H-version and was the last serial version of this tank. The Panzer IV has always been overshadowed by its better-known Panther and Tiger brothers. But this particular tank was a "workhorse" panzerwaffe Actually, it is difficult to call version J a development of the design. All its modifications were aimed at simplifying and speeding up production. This was understandable, because at that time the Germans felt more and more the lack of various materials. The most important changes include the discontinuation of Zimmerite. They also abandoned the two-stroke engine, which drives the electric motor that rotates the tower through the generator set. This modification meant that the turret could only be turned by hand (sic!). A fuel tank was installed in place of the removed two-stroke engine, which increased the range. In addition, instead of a muffler located horizontally, the characteristic two vertical exhaust pipes were installed, somewhat similar to those of the Panther. The wheels supporting the tracks were only steel. At the beginning of production, 4 pairs were assembled, and only 3 pairs were ready. But perhaps the most characteristic change was the mesh side screens - the so-called "Thoma Schürzen". The screens were intended to protect the tank from cumulative shells, for example, from the American "bazooka". Of the 9,170 "fours" produced, at least 1,758 were built in the J version.
