Assembled model Warship Yamato Tamiya 31113

Yamato (大和, "Great Harmony") was the lead ship of her class of battleships built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) shortly before World War II. She and her sister ship, the Musashi, were the heaviest and most heavily armed battleships ever built, displacing 72,800 tons at full load and armed with nine 46 cm (18.1 in) Type 94 guns, the largest guns, ever installed on a warship. .

Named after the ancient Japanese province of Yamato, Yamato was designed to counter the outnumbered battleship fleet of the United States, Japan's main rival in the Pacific. It was laid in 1937 and officially put into operation a week after the attack on Pearl Harbor in late 1941. During 1942, she served as the flagship of the Combined Fleet, and in June 1942, Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto commanded the fleet from her bridge during the Battle of Midway, a disastrous defeat for Japan. Musashi became flagship of the Combined Fleet in early 1943, and Yamato spent the remainder of the year and most of 1944 shuttling between the main Japanese naval bases of Truk and Kuri in response to American threats. Although she was present at the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, she did not take part in the battle.

The only time Yamato fired her main guns at enemy surface targets was in October 1944, when she was sent to engage American forces invading the Philippines during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Threatening to sink an American transport, they collided with the light carrier escort group of the US Navy's 77th Task Force Toffee 3 at the Battle of Samar. The Japanese turned back after American air attacks convinced them that they were attacking a powerful US carrier fleet.
