With the first steps of man in space and on the moon, the future of the Earth took a new direction. However, the first rockets designed for space travel could only be used once, which increased the cost of expeditions. It soon became clear that the successful conquest of space cannot continue with the use of such expensive technologies. In 1972, NASA, the American space agency, began research on a reusable spacecraft. The project resulted in a combination rocket and aircraft known as the Space Shuttle. A shuttle with a huge fuel tank can be launched into space thanks to the power of its three engines and two auxiliary rockets. The ferry itself reaches the size of an average airliner, carrying about seven crew members, mostly cargo. The space shuttle fleet has given us new opportunities to develop our activities in space. Satellites can be placed into orbit by space shuttles, as well as components of space stations, which in the future can be used as starting points for further space exploration.
