1/200 British Flying Cloud Heller 80830 clipper kit The Flying Cloud was an American and later British clipper of the 19th century. The unit was launched in 1851, and the cost of its construction at that time was 90 thousand dollars. The ship was built at a shipyard in the city of East Boston in the USA. The ship was 69 m long and 12.7 m wide. Its displacement (according to American standards) was about 1750 tons. There was no armament on the ship. Flying Cloud was designed and built under the supervision of American engineer and famous clipper designer Donald Mackey. The clipper had a very thin hull with probably good hydrodynamic properties, and also had - as befits a true clipper - very rich sails. The clipper was also known for its very high speed and good seamanship. The uniqueness of the design is evidenced by the fact that it traveled from New York to San Francisco, rounding Cape Horn in 89 days and 8 hours. This record remained unbroken until 1989!
