The new rules set a body width similar to the production width, which, however, could use larger fenders to benefit from wider tracks and larger tires. BMW entered the Group 5 competition with a special version of its new top model E21 '320'. A new aerodynamic profile was created that integrated large mudguards, and a powerful engine capable of producing 300 hp was used.
