The BMD-2 infantry fighting vehicle was developed in the early 1980s and entered service with the Soviet Army in 1985. Serial production of the machine also began in 1985, and the machine is still in service with the troops of the Russian Federation (2017). BMD-2 is equipped with the same engine as BMD-1, that is, one 5D20 engine with a capacity of 240 hp, and can carry up to 4-5 paratroopers. The main armament of BMD-2 is: 30-mm cannon 2A42, 1 machine gun PKT cal.: 7.62-mm and 1 ATGM launcher (anti-tank guided missile) 9M111 Fagot or 9M113 Konkurs. The BMD-2 infantry fighting vehicle, like the BMD-1, was intended primarily for service in the Soviet airborne troops, and its development was based on the experience of the war in Afghanistan (1979-1989). First of all - in relation to the BMD-1 - the main armament of the machine has been changed, a new turret of the B30 type with a one-man crew has been applied, its ergonomics have been improved by facilitating the tasks of the machine commander. The possibility of overcoming water obstacles without special training and the possibility of air transportation by airplanes (for example, AN-12) or helicopters (for example, MI-6) were also preserved. BMD-2 was used in combat operations in Afghanistan in 1979-1989. official data - not exported.
