The main characteristics of the vehicle were to be its mobility on, off-road and in water, the capabilities of anti-ballistic, nuclear, bacteriological and chemical (NBC) protection and, above all, its multi-purpose nature and simplicity of design, ensuring ease of training, use and maintenance . After long and rigorous tests by the army, in 1974 the General Staff chose the vehicle that was to become the Véhicule de l’Avant Blindé (armored front-line vehicle): the VAB. 4x4 VAB entered service in 1976. One body of the chassis is made of high-strength armored steel. The engine and fuel tank are located in a forward central position, and a connecting corridor connects the commander's and driver's cabins at the front with a large rear area, which is accessed by two wide doors without a center pillar.
