The Ordnance Quick-Firing (QF) 17-pounder 76.2 mm gun entered service with the British Army in 1943. It was a classic towed anti-tank gun, which from the very beginning was designed to fight even the most heavily armored German vehicles of that time (1943). During its service, it turned out to be almost the best anti-tank gun of the Allies. in the service of the allied forces. The 17-pounder gun was also installed on several Allied vehicles, such as the Sherman Firefly tank. This gun used several types of projectiles. One such projectile was Amor Piercing Capped (Amor Piercing Capped), which, however, was used only by Sherman Firefly tank crews. Another type of bullet was the APCBC - structurally similar to the American M62A1 for the M1 tank gun - which could penetrate 150 mm armor at distances up to 1,000 meters. A significant qualitative change was the use of the APDS projectile, that is, an anti-tank projectile with a cable holder, which theoretically could penetrate up to 233 mm of armor from a distance of 1000 meters, but in practice this figure was slightly less. This missile entered service at the beginning of July 1944. Separately, it is worth noting the OH type projectile, which, however, was used less often than the above-mentioned types of projectiles, given the task of the 17-pounder gun.
