M8A1 steel plates were a coating for airfields developed by the US engineering services. The slabs were used primarily for the rapid construction of temporary runways. Such plates were used in the Vietnam War in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s, most often in army aviation (for basing helicopters, light attack aircraft and surveillance aircraft). They can be seen in many photographs of that time. One plate was 3660 x 560 mm in size and had a rigid corrugated surface that drained rainwater well. Installation was carried out by engineering units of the US Army. The plates were connected to each other either in a staggered order or in a row, and allowed to build both individual small platforms and airfields of significant size.
