Krankenpanzerwagen Sd.Kfz.251/8 Ausf.A German sanitary armored personnel carrier 2SV The Sd.Kfz.251 semi-tracked armored personnel carrier was the main armored vehicle of the Wehrmacht. It was created by the Hanomag company in 1938, serial production began in the summer of the following year. Armored personnel carriers were in service with the German army throughout the Second World War and were used in all theaters of operations, a total of 15,252 vehicles of various series and modifications were produced. The first modification - Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.A - was produced in 1939-1940. One version of this modification was the Sd.Kfz.251/8 for evacuating the wounded from the battlefield. It could carry different numbers of wounded, for example, two lying on a stretcher and four sitting. The stretchers were hung on special fasteners, and semicircular railings for the awning, which protected against bad weather, were also installed on top of the hull. The equipment of the transporter also included a tank for drinking water, and to facilitate boarding in the transport compartment, an additional step was installed at the back. As a rule, armored medical transporters were part of staff companies (Stabskompanie). To show their difference from other vehicles, such transporters carried large insignia with a red medical cross on the hull.
