The Merkava (Hebrew for "chariot") is an Israeli main battle tank developed since 1974 and entered serial production in 1979. The design team worked under the leadership of Major General Israel Tal, one of Israel's most distinguished armored officers. The Merkava is the result of the Israeli army's experience in the Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War. The Israel Defense Forces ordered the development of the Merkava tank to ensure an independent source of heavy combat equipment. The designers of the machine were primarily guided by the idea of the machine's survival on the battlefield, so the Merkava is characterized by innovative armor that perfectly protects the crew members, and in case of damage, it allows you to quickly replace the faulty element. The concept of placing the engine in the front of the car is also unique. Four production series were created: Mk.I, Mk.II, Mk.III and Mk.IV, which have been in production since 2001. Compared to previous versions in the Mk. III, the suspension was significantly improved, thus increasing performance and comfort for the crew. A 120-mm gun was also installed instead of a 105-mm gun. The Mk.III version also has a CVIS control system, which greatly increases its combat value. In the latest version, armor, guidance systems and battlefield surveillance have been improved. According to the fairly unanimous opinion of experts, the Merkava and its subsequent modifications provide the Israel Defense Forces with a decisive advantage over the armored potential of the Arab opponent. Technical data (Mk.II version): length (with barrel): 8.63 m, width: 3.7 m, height: 2.66 m, weight 60 t, engine power:
