step-by-step instructions. Zhiyuan was a protected cruiser built for the Imperial Chinese Navy. She was one of two Zhiyuan-class protected cruisers built, along with her sister ship Jingyuan. Zhiyuan was armed with fewer large naval guns, unlike later ships of the type (such as the British Pearl class), which had a larger number of smaller guns. This was explained by the fact that the medium-caliber rapid-fire cannon had not yet been introduced, so the firepower of a warship at that time mostly depended on the weight of an individual projectile, and not on the volume of fire. Both ships were assigned to the Beiyang fleet and were captained by Deng Shichang throughout their lives.
