The Junkers Ju 88 was a twin-engine, multi-role Luftwaffe aircraft of World War II. The aircraft was developed by the Hugo Junkers company in the mid-1930s, as part of a project to develop a "fast bomber" (German: Schnellbomber), and was supposed to be faster than any fighter of the period, the aircraft had a number of technical problems late in its development , but this did not prevent it from becoming one of the most versatile combat aircraft of the war. The pilots affectionately nicknamed the Ju 88 the "maid of all trades" (German: Mädchen für Alles), and the aircraft really coped with any role. Like a number of other Luftwaffe bombers, it was successfully used as a bomber, dive bomber, torpedo bomber, aerial reconnaissance aircraft, heavy fighter, and even as a flying bomb.
