The Grumman F3F is a single-seat combat fighter that was Grumman's last biplane fighter and the last biplane of the US Navy. The prototype flew on March 20, 1935, and in January of the following year, deliveries of F3F-1 series 54 aircraft began. In 1937, a contract was signed for the delivery of a new version of the F3F-2 with a more powerful engine. Deliveries began in July 1937, and 81 copies of this version were built. The following year, the F3F-3 variant was created with a slightly modified fuselage, this variant went into production in December 1938. In total, 165 aircraft of all modifications were built. In the early 1940s, F3Fs became the basis of airborne fighter squadrons of the US Navy. The F3F entered service with 8 fighter squadrons (used, including, on the aircraft carriers USS Ranger and USS Saratoga). The last aircraft was decommissioned from the US Navy in the summer of 1941.
