The Colosseum (actually the Flavian Amphitheater) is a monumental Roman structure built in the first century AD, or more precisely, between AD 70 and AD 82 by the emperors Vespasian and Titus. The building was and still is elliptical in shape, 188 meters long and 156 meters wide, and its height is 48.5 meters. Suppose that in ancient times it could have 40 to 50 thousand inhabitants. viewers! From the moment of its creation, it served primarily as an arena for gladiator fights, a place for staged sea battles and hunting for wild animals. It is interesting that the Colosseum was by no means the largest building in the ancient city of Rome - the Great Circus deserved such a name, but it has not survived to this day. It is worth adding that the Colosseum was badly damaged during an earthquake in the middle of the 5th century, and the last games were held there at the beginning of the next century, probably around 528. Currently, it is one of the most famous buildings in Rome and a huge tourist attraction.
