In the late 1970s, still at the test stage, the command of the US Army decided to use the M2 to develop the M3 combat vehicle, which is very difficult to distinguish from its "relative". During serial production, several versions of M2 cars were created. The first major upgrade was the M2A1 version, which had a twin-tube TOW launcher (instead of one). Later, a version of the M2A2 was created that had reinforced armor, with the ability to use dynamic armor and a new 600 horsepower engine. Finally, the last—at least for now—was the M2A3 version, which was even more heavily armored and received much more advanced electronics. M2 / M3 machines are equipped only in Saudi Arabia and the USA. They also participated in several conflicts, most notably Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1991.
