In the early stages of World War II, the German armed forces used half-track tractors to evacuate tanks damaged during the fighting. However, as the mass of vehicles increased, as well as the desire to standardize the vehicles used, specially adapted tanks such as the Bergepanzer III began to be used in this role. Production of these machines continued from March 1944 to 1945. A total of 176 copies of this evacuation tank were created in its course. They used the chassis of Panzer III tanks intended for repair and renewal. The reconstruction consisted in dismantling the tower and installing a special wooden box in its place, as well as technical and mining equipment. However, there was no winch and dump truck in the car. Manufactured Bergepanzer III vehicles were most often assigned to units that used Panzer III tanks and Sturmgeschutz self-propelled guns. III.
