Assembled model 1/72 aircraft Consolidated B-24H Liberator Airfix A09010 The consolidated B-24 Liberator, America's second largest four-engine heavy bomber of World War II, began development after the Army Air Corps asked the company to build B-17 Flying Fortresses. Undeterred by this prospect, Consolidated proposed to design and manufacture their own bomber in the same time it would take to set up production lines, and it would be better than the Flying Fortress. When their XB-24 prototype took to the air on December 29, 1939, it was a very different aircraft from the B-17 Flying Fortress, with its thin, shoulder-mounted wings, deep but narrow fuselage, and twin tails. it had the appearance of a seaplane. After its final introduction into service with the US Air Force in 1941, the B-24 Liberator was produced in huge numbers, serving in every theater during World War II and making an important contribution to the Allied war effort. The introduction of the "H" model was aimed at the aircraft's vulnerability to frontal attack, something that enemy fighter pilots had been using since the B-24 was introduced. This variant was the first to be built with the powered Emerson A-15 nose turret, but also had about 50 other modifications to make the Liberator a more combat-effective aircraft. It was also the first variant to truly utilize America's mass production capabilities, and it was claimed that Ford could produce the Liberator faster than the US Air Force could convert them into service. The Consolidated B-24 Liberator became the most produced four-engine bomber in the history of war and America's most produced aircraft of World War II. Simply put, the B-24 flew more men, carried more bombs over long distances, and destroyed more targets than any other bomber in aviation history.
