Prefab model 1/72 aircraft North American B-25C D Mitchell Airfix A06015A The role of the medium bomber proved to be one of the most important during the Second World War, and after a difficult operation, the North American B-25 Mitchell turned into a very successful aircraft. Employed in every theater of operations, the B-25 was the most versatile aircraft of its type, performing a multitude of tactical roles in many different operating environments. Perhaps the most famous action involving a North American B-25 Mitchell occurred just after 8 a.m. on April 18, 1942, when sixteen bombers rose from the relatively short deck of the USS Hornet and headed for Japan. Conceived as a strike at the very heart of the Japanese Empire, which infamously attacked the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, this daring and heroic raid illustrated the determination of the American people and the determination of its military forces to strive for victory. The first B-25Bs used in the Doolittle raid performed well, but were already in the process of being upgraded. The later C/D model (different letters were used to denote the manufacturer) proved to be the final version of this highly effective medium bomber and was the first truly production version of the aircraft. An extremely durable and versatile aircraft, the Mitchell was used as an anti-submarine patrol aircraft off the coast of Florida and as an attack bomber in the deserts of North Africa, proving successful in both. Some of the later versions of the B-25 became the most heavily armed aircraft of the war, with no less than 18 machine guns and a number of other offensive weapons. With a robust nose containing 8 heavy guns, these aircraft were deadly warships capable of destroying anything in the line of fire.
