This 5 cm Pak 38 anti-tank gun, the first examples of which entered the troops in July 1940, was the successor to the 3.7 cm Pak 36. It received such design improvements as a muzzle brake, aluminum alloy frames and a gun shield made of two 4 mm steel sheets; when using Panzergranate 39 shells, the gun could penetrate 61 mm of armor at an angle of 60 degrees from a distance of 500 meters. First used in the Balkan theater of operations in the spring of 1941, the Pak 38 also took part in the invasion of the Soviet Union, where it opposed the famous T-34 and KV-1, and in North Africa it fought against the British Matilda and Valentine tanks. By 1943, 9,600 units of this reliable weapon had been manufactured.
