Prefab model Car Toyoda Model AA Tamiya 24339

The Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 destroyed Japan's railway system, and it was only then that the automobile began to affect people's lives as cars and trucks (mainly American designs) were used to transport people and goods, and the railway network was rebuilt.

Both General Motors and Ford have built plants in Japan to produce cars that are supplied as knock-down kits from US-made parts. In 1933, Japanese industrialist Kiichiro Toyoda established the automotive department of his Toyoda automatic loom factory and began development of what later became the Toyoda A1. This turned into a series of cars of its own production. In 1937, the automotive branch was renamed Toyota Automotive Works, and the rest is history.

The A1 was the first prototype passenger car built by the company that became Toyota. It was redesigned and put into production as Toyota's first production cars, the AA sedan and the AB convertible. They were replaced by similar AE, AC and BA sedans.

The AA used a 6-cylinder Type A engine with a volume of 3389 cc and a power of 62 hp. (46 kW) with a 3-speed manual gearbox with column shift. The engine was copied from Chevrolet, and the chassis and electrics - from Ford.

Solid axles were used at both ends. Stamped metal rims (very modern for the time) were used for all 4 wheel rims. Braking was by drums. The mechanics were the same as the AA, AB and G1 production cars. The car went into production in 1936 and ended in 1942 when the tougher AC version was released. More than 1,400 cars were produced in total, and given that you could buy a house for the price of one of these cars, the low production rate is not surprising.
