The M60A3 is a new joint book from Ammunition and SABOT Publications. A photo reference magazine about the U.S. Army's main battle tank of the Cold War.
The M60A3 began its history as a variant of the M60 series in 1978 and featured a number of improvements such as a smoke exhaust on the turret, a laser rangefinder, a new ballistic computer, and a new turret stabilization system. A crosswind sensor and a thermal imaging sight were also added. The M60A3 was the workhorse of the U.S. Army in the 1970s and 1980s, and remained the front-line main battle tank for many countries well into the 21st century.
With over 15,000 built during its service life and upgraded in various ways, it was still in service with the US until 1997 and is still in front-line service with many armies around the world today. This long service life is a testament to the reliability of the original M60 design. Although initially considered by some to be a first-generation main battle tank, the M60A3 has been modernized and improved to become a fully second-generation MBT on par with its European counterparts of the seventies and eighties, such as the British Chieftain, the German Leopard and the French AMX-30. It is now retired from US service, but some specialized variants are still active.
