DESCRIPTION
Medium tanks of the M4 Sherman series were not only the main armored vehicle of the US Army during the Second World War, but also the driving force that brought victory to the Allies in the conflict. It was the most massive tank during the war, produced more than 55,000 machines in all variants. The five main variants from the M4 to the M4A4 were designated by the body and the engine used. The M4 used a welded angular body and a Continental R975-C1 radial aircraft engine. Despite the fact that it is powerful and proven, its tall central propeller shaft gave the hull a high profile. The suspension had a strong and simple design, known as VVSS (Vertical Volute Spring Suspension), with three blocks (or bogies) on each side and with two support rollers on each. The transmission was 5-speed forward, plus reverse. Early M4 models had a 3-piece front transmission cover and a cast steel turret with a 75mm gun. For additional protection, overlay armor plates were added to the turret, sides of the hull and right in front of the bow hatches of the hull. Production of the M4 began in July 1942, five months later than the M4A1 with a cast body. It was deployed for the first time during the Italian campaign in May 1943.
