Mitsubishi J2M Raiden (Japanese lightning bolt) is a Japanese single-engine interceptor with an all-metal semi-hull construction of the Second World War, known by the Allied nickname Jack. The flight of the prototype took place on March 20, 1942, and serial production began at the end of the same year. Several versions of the J2M were produced during the war. The most common version was the J2M3, armed with 4 20mm cannons and powered by the MK4R-A Kasei 13 1870KM engine. This version received its baptism of fire during the battles in the Mariana Islands in September 1944, later the J2M3 was used to defend the Japanese islands from B-29 airstrikes. It was one of the few Japanese fighters that, thanks to its high rate of climb and excellent armament, could fight effectively with Allied bombers. Pilots of the 302nd air group (Atsuga base) from the end of 1944 to the end of the war shot down about 300 planes with these machines. Only 476 units of this successful fighter were produced. Technical data (J2M3 version): length: 10.68 m, wingspan: 11.6 m, height: 4.2 m, maximum speed: 574 km / h, rate of climb: 19.5 m / s, maximum range: 560 km, the maximum ceiling is 12,500 m, armament: stationary - 4 Type 99 guns of 20 mm caliber.
