"Admiral Nakhimov" (formerly "Kalinin") is a Soviet, and later Russian, nuclear-powered missile cruiser, the keel of which was laid in 1983, launched in April 1986 and commissioned in December 1988. The total length of the ship was 252 meters. and 28.5 meters wide. The full displacement reached 28,000 tons, and the maximum speed was 31 knots. The cruiser was armed with: one 130-mm double-barreled gun, eight 30-mm AK-630 launchers, 20 SS-N-19 rocket launchers (P-700 "Granite") and 12 S-300 anti-aircraft missile launchers. The ship could also operate three Kamow Ka-25 or Ka-27 helicopters. "Admiral Nakhimov" (formerly "Kalinin") was the third of four ships of the "Kirov" class. Ships of the "Kirov" type were designed and built as powerful ships designed to combat enemy surface and submarine warfare. Later, a broad range of countermeasures against air targets was added. When the first ship of its class entered service, it was the largest warship in the world, excluding aircraft carriers! It is worth adding that units of this type contributed to the restoration of battleships of the "Iowa" type in the US Navy. Shortly after joining the service, Admiral Nakhimov was sent to the Northern Fleet. The imminent end of the Cold War and the major problems faced by the Russian armed forces, including the Russian Federation Navy, meant that the Admiral Nakhimov was not used intensively, but it also proved problematic to maintain the unit's full combat capability. The terms of decommissioning of the unit were mentioned several times, but in the end, in 2014, a decision was made to overhaul and modernize this powerful ship. It was supposed, among other things, to install the S-400 anti-aircraft system and the possibility of using P-800 anti-ship missiles. Currently, it is assumed that the installation should enter service in 2020-2022.
