The M48 Patton was a main battle tank (MBT) developed in the United States. It was the third tank officially named after General George S. Patton, commander of the Third United States Army during World War II and one of the first American proponents of the use of tanks in combat. It was a further development of the M47 Patton. The M48 Patton remained in service with the United States until it was replaced by the M60, and served as the main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was widely used by the United States' Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries.
