Alexander Nevsky is a Russian Borei-class submarine. The class is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) under construction since 2007. Five of the class have been launched, but more are still under construction. The Borei-class is 170 m long, 13.5 m wide, and has a submerged displacement of approximately 24,000 tons. The maximum submerged speed is approximately 29 knots. The main armament of the class consists of 16 SS-NX-30 (P-30 Bulava) ballistic missile launchers and 6 533 mm torpedo tubes.
The Borei class (Project 955) ships were built as a completely new design, intended to replace the Delta III and Typhoon class ships in the line. They differ from their predecessors primarily in significantly richer electronic equipment and even more thorough soundproofing, including the use of pumped-jet engines. They are also adapted to fire new ballistic missiles (R-30 Bulava) with a range of up to 8,000 kilometers and capable of carrying up to 6 RGH warheads. Most likely, the Russian Navy will eventually intend to purchase from 8 to 10 units of this type. The Alexander Nevsky (K-550) ship was built at the Severodvinsk shipyard. The keel for this unit was laid in 2004, and launched in December 2010, and in October of the following year the ship began its first sea trials. It entered line service in December 2013. The unit currently belongs to the Pacific Fleet. Its estimated construction cost is approximately $770 million. Prices for 2012.
