Triomphe is the name of a class of French nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) built from 1986 to 2010. There are four units of this class in total, all of which are active. The Triomphe class ship is 138 m long, 12.5 m wide and has a displacement of approximately 14,300 tons. The maximum underwater speed is about 25-26 knots. The main armament of the units of this class consisted of 16 ballistic missile launchers (type M45 or M51) and four 533 mm torpedo tubes.
The Triomphe class ships were built and put into production to replace the Redoutable class ships in the line. The new ships have a slightly different hull design, which provides them with better hydrodynamic properties. They are also expected to be able to reach a much greater depth of immersion (about 400 m compared to about 300 m for the Redoutable class) and, of course, develop a higher underwater speed. They are also characterized by richer electronic and - probably - hydroacoustic equipment. The most important difference, however, lies in the main armament - the Triomphe class ships carry ballistic missiles with a longer range and greater firepower than the Redoutable class ships. Ships of this class are also considered the most expensive in the world, as the entire program of their development and construction cost over 17.1 billion euros! And the price of a ship unit is estimated at 3-3.1 billion euros.
