The Type 59 is a first-generation Chinese medium tank, which is a Chinese copy of the Soviet T-54A. Its production designation is WZ-120. A total of approximately 9,500 units of various versions of the tank were produced. The production of this tank allowed China not only to create a modern and numerous armored force at the time but also to give impetus to the emergence and development of its own tank industry. It was precisely on the basis of this tank that Chinese engineers and specialists gained the invaluable experience accumulated over the years by Soviet tank builders, which became the foundation upon which the original Chinese school of tank design emerged. The Type 59 tank family remains in service with the PLA’s armored forces to this day.
