The Hawker Hurricane was the most widespread and used fighter aircraft by the British Royal Air Force at the beginning of the Second World War. The Hurricane was powered by a liquid-cooled Rolls-Royce Merlin 12-cylinder in-line engine with over 1,000 HP, which could take it to a speed of over 500 km/h. The 8 7.7 mm Browning machine guns with which it was equipped also guaranteed good firepower. Although it was slower and more antiquated, in terms of aerodynamic design, than its famous “colleague” Supermarine Spitfire with which it shared operational commitment during the Battle of Britain, it was still more robust, cheaper and easier to maintain and repair. It was also easier to fly and pilot training was quicker, contributing significantly to the victory during the Battle of Britain. Famous RAF “aces” flew on the Hurricane, such as: J. Johnson, W. Vale and R, Stanford Tuck.
