The Grumman F9F Panther is an American single-engine fighter aircraft. The prototype flew in 1947, and it entered service with the F9F just before the start of the Korean War. The production F9Fs were powered by licensed Rolls-Royce RB.44 Tay engines (American designation: Pratt-Whitney J48-P-2). A total of 1,382 examples of this successful fighter aircraft were built. It saw active service during the Korean War, where pilots who flew it recorded several MiG-15 kills. The F9F became the primary fighter of the United States Navy and the primary assault aircraft of the Marine Corps during the conflict. Future astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong flew them. The aircraft were retired from service in 1956.
